Jasper National Park

August 1

Jasper is a beautiful park, but today we just needed to veg. When we asked the girls what they wanted to do, they said 'play in the campsite' - so they did. What imaginations they have! We don't have a TV or DVD player on this trip, so they need them. Today they played 'Max and Ruby' and had a blast in their giant sandpit.

Toward the end of the day we decided to do one more drive in Jasper. On our way out of the campground, we saw a sign for a trailer drop off for the Mount Edith Cavell road. Usually a trailer drop-off means the road is going to be twisty, so I couldn't resist. The road was twisty alright, and climbed to the near top of Mount Edith Cavell were it lead to numerous trails to different glaciers.

We were unprepared and under-dressed - no warm clothes and flip flops. Nevertheless, we did the 1.6 km trail to the Angel glacier. It was much better the than Icefields centre and I highly recommend it if you are out this way. We walked along the lateral moraine to the glacier then back to the parking lot via the river bed. The girls enjoyed the walk much more than Icefields, and thankfully is was less cold. We could see 3 glaciers: Angel, Cavell, and Ghost. Angel glacier is in the background of these photos:

We also heard and saw a small rockslide while we were there - a reminder of these mountains power. Once again DD1 wanted her picture taken with a rock: "Mama, this rock would make a nice picture!"

Back at the campsite we had our first real rain since the Prairies, and discovered a small leak in the trailer. Ugh, DH thinks its just needs to be re-caulked - let's hope so!
