Calgary, AB to Yoho, BC

July 13

odometer 928618

Well, almost Yoho - we made it to Banff.

Started the day with another, final, visit to the clinic which took hours...argh don't people know I'm on vacation? Finished the IV and on oral antibiotics.

Meanwhile, a new problem has cropped up with the trailer. When the tire blew, debris punctured the wheel well and vapour barrier underneath the trailer. So we have road crap under our bench seat and a wet floor. We also discovered that wheel wells are made out of ducting - practically aluminum foil. Not the most durable stuff. Anyways, DH fixed it with some spray foam and duct tape - we'll see how it holds up. We let the floor dry out and he sealed the hole in the vapour barrier with more tape.

While waiting in the campground, I wondered around looking for licence plates - found some for South Dakota, Illinois, Washington, Oregon, and Pennsylvannia.

After running around for materials to repair the trailer and to refill my prescription, it was after 1 pm when we finally left Calgary. Unfortunately it was raining, and grey, and not great for seeing the Rockies for the first time but what can you do. The drive was still pretty, and at least the car was cool when climbing the mountains. Actually, it was cold, like 8 degrees! Freakish Calgary weather.

Entered Banff, our first national park of the trip, and bought a national park pass for the family. We figure we will be national parks for about 14 days, so it will pay for itself twice.

Drove through Banff, a very picturesque ski village. Crowded as heck though and not my cup of tea. Drove through the town to check out Bow Falls - neat to see the blue-green glacial water and a small waterfall. Had to pull out the hats and mitts b/c it was so cold and rainy.

Took the Bow Valley Parkway instead of the T-Can, speed limits are irrelevant to us so we didn't figure we'd lose any time. We like the pretty, twisty road. Decided to stop at Johnston Canyon Campground around 5 pm. Thought we might hike up to the Canyon in the morning to see the falls.

Had a nice supper of marinated pork tenderolin, creamed corn, potatoes, and peas. Yum Yum. We are camping right along the railway, so DH and the girls went to check out the trains while I cleaned up. Everybody got to bed at a decent time, so DH and I did some trip planning before heading to bed. Yoho tomorrow!

  1. Calgary weather is very unpredicatable, but I guess the adage is if you don't like the weather, wait 5 minutes hold true!

Banff is nice, if not over priced, so it was good that you were able to see some of the mountains and water ways - well what you could see.

I too like windy roads, so continue with the path less taken - I will keep the Frost onhand for future references
